Fidelity Investments

Financial Representative Inter

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to interact directly with retail clients in order to service them with personal and account needs.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to have been able to sit in on more financial planning meetings.

Advice

Always stay upbeat and open-minded! Finances are a very personal aspect of one's life, and can be really overwhelming to clients who rely on institutions such as Fidelity to guide them in the correct direction in finding financial security and a good plan for the future.

Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, NY

What I liked

The corporate culture is fantastic; a collaborative environment that acts as a hub for new trends and information in the financial industry and marketing sphere. With days dedicated to learning and immersing myself in the day to day of my managers while also contributing to ongoing projects and my own self-guided project, I was able to connect with many individuals and layers to the company.

What I wish was different

I wish this was something that could be connected to RWU. However, this position is usually found within your own personal network

Advice

Absorb all the information you can and be open to new experiences.

Credit Risk Analyst

June - August 2019 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

Great group that I worked in, and learned a ton. We had a week in Boston for training with a chance to shadow different groups and people, along with the opportunity to sit in on meetings. Throughout the summer, I got to see all the functions that exist within Fidelity and hear from everybody in senior management.

What I wish was different

I wish that maybe the commute was less difficult, but really no other wishes about the internship itself. Great experience.

Advice

One piece of advice is to reach out to everyone that you can so you can make the most out of it and learn the most from functions of the business other than the one I worked in every day. I was treated like any other employee after training which was a great simulation of real work.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work culture! I found the agile environment to be very stimulating and there was never a dull moment. The learning curve was ongoing and manageable which I appreciated since I received a lot of support and encouragement from my team members throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I did not feel as prepared as I could have been coming into the internship. My manager had me dynamically pick up an entire new programming language in a short amount of time. There were plenty of internal resources at the company to leverage however and help me through the learning curve.

Advice

If you ever feel overwhelmed with an assignment and project you have been tasked with, leverage your resources! Speak up and talk to your team members and figure out what you are stuck with or what seems overwhelming! Timelines are usually flexible and project deliverables can be readjusted to your abilities and interests.

Leap Intern

June - August 2019 • Smithfield, RI

What I liked

Management and team members were very accessible and friendly. I was encouraged to seek help, network, and ask professional advice. There was also plenty of internship events for charity, money management, technical presentations, and networking. For my project(s), I was given the freedom to pursue something I was interested, and was challenged, but supported during my time here.

What I wish was different

I had a great experience and would not change anything!

Advice

The internship is what you make of it. It is possible to glide through the summer without too much to show, and no one will babysit you to make sure you are doing your work. But if you really want to get as much experience as possible here, you will be encouraged and supported in doing so. Ask for help and for work!

I got to see a lot of other departments and participate in intern events - the internship program there is very important to them.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I liked how I go to work on real projects and didn't have to do any busy work. I felt like I was just another software developer on the team, and I was able to take on anything any of the other developers could.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't been scared to ask questions at the beginning, so that I could have gained a better understanding quicker and gotten more done throughout the summer. I could've asked a question for a few minutes instead of searched through code for hours to answer that same question.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially at the beginning.

Capital Markets Credit Risk Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibility and the opportunity to learn a ton. They definitely utilized me to my maximum potential and push me to do my best work. The environment was very welcoming and I felt like a valuable member of the team.

What I wish was different

I wish my group had more interns in it. I was the only one in my immediate area and sometimes felt isolated from other intern groups.

Advice

Take on every piece of work they throw at you to learn as much as possible. I talked about extra projects I took on at all my interviews and used it as an example of my work ethic. Don't take any day for granted, reach out to higher ups and have coffee. Just get face-time with anyone you can.
