Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Intern (Summer 2020)

Summary
The Public Policy & Advocacy (PPA) department is looking for an Intern to work with the Humanitarian Advocacy Team in DC. The intern will report directly to the Associate Director for International Humanitarian Response Policy and Advocacy. They will assist in daily activities and, with guidance from staff, support humanitarian policy and advocacy projects during their internship at Save the Children. The main thematic areas of focus will be on protecting children in conflict, refugee education, and mental health and psychosocial support. Crises of focus may include the Rohingya response, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and other humanitarian emergencies as they arise.
 
What You’ll be Doing (Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Impact)
  • Support Save the Children’s work in advocating on 1) thematic humanitarian response issues, 2) humanitarian assistance funding, and 3) specific crises.
  • Support the Humanitarian Advocacy Team by conducting research on the U.S. government’s humanitarian response efforts specific to our thematic and country priorities, maintaining databases, and taking minutes for internal and external meetings.
  • Draft and edit communications materials (invitations, thank you letters, meeting notes, website content, PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, etc.).
  • Attend and report out on Congressional hearings and briefings as well as NGO coalition working group meetings.
  • Attend internal agency meetings and training sessions with the opportunity to learn about Save the Children’s programs and gain professional skills.
  • Other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be an actively enrolled Associate, Bachelor, Master or other post high school education program, or have graduated within 6 months of intern program start date
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Currently eligible to work in the U.S.

Part-time:       24 hours per week
