Unum

Actuarial Assistant

June 2020 • Chattanooga, TN

What I liked

Friendly and helpful culture, huge focus on development of employees

What I wish was different

I would like to have worked in person rather than remotely

Advice

Even if you don’t think you have the experience for a job, apply anyway! Market your strengths but be honest about where you don’t have experience. Show your eagerness to learn.

Sales and Client Management Intern

June - August 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Everyone is very welcoming and always willing to help. You learn a lot about the employee benefits industry and the importance of it. The company culture is amazing and I would recommend this internship to anyone, they are very open to all majors, so if you are looking to learn about this industry give it a try!

What I wish was different

The internship program is fairly new, sometimes you may feel a little lost on what tasks you can do that are not modules. I recommend asking if you can help anyone with any current project.

Advice

Be yourself and be open-minded! This industry can offer you a lot and you also learn more than just employee benefits and insurance. I recommend talking to as many departments and other employees there as to get more of a feel of what the company has to offer you and what you can offer them!

Test Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

Unum has competitive pay. They offer many social and development opportunities during and outside of work. They assign you a mentor to help you during your time there. They were very well prepared for us from day-one. You are given meaningful work.

What I wish was different

I wish they didn't have cubicles. I wish I could have worked on more projects at once.

Advice

You should definitely apply. Try it for a summer. Be prepared for the modern cubicles where you aren't assigned a seat. Don't be afraid to ask for something if you need it. Take chances.

Operation Services Intern

July - August 2018 • Chattanooga, TN

What I liked

I enjoyed the freedom I was given as an intern. I was allowed to work on non-trivial projects in a manner that I found most suitable to my work style. I also enjoyed working with other interns to complete a project we were given by a product owner within the company. This project is now being deployed within the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had provided more ideas, feedback, and suggestions. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to provide feedback initially since all the employees I was working with were far more experienced than I was.

Advice

Make sure to voice your opinions and share your ideas. Your voice is more valuable than you think and the employees at the company really will value what you have to say.

Summer Intern

June - August 2017 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the amount of freedom Unum gave us interns, and the amount of respect we received from all levels of employees. The amenities were pretty great, and the professional development programs they encouraged us to participate in were very informative. We were assigned individual projects that we were expected to present on at the end of the 11 week program in front of the senior executive board.

What I wish was different

I wish that it was more relevant to my major, but my soft skills did improve quite a bit. I gained confidence in myself through various forms of communication, and learned what it was like to work in a corporate setting.

Advice

Be sure to scope out the details of your internship. Consider the commute time because that can really make or break your experiences. Make the most of it, no matter what you end up doing, and network as much as you can in your workplace. You never know what options are out there unless you ask!
